Third Annual EECP Therapy Week Celebration by IETA

Third Annual EECP Therapy Week Celebration by IETA was held in Chennai, India on 27th February 2014 to create awareness about Enhanced External Counterpulsation therapy and its role in non invasive cardiac care. The program was organized by the International EECP Therapist Association IETA, with Dr. S. Ramasamy, International Medical Director of IETA, launching the first EECP patient awareness program at a Tamil Nadu Government Medical College Hospital.

The awareness program was conducted as part of the third annual EECP Therapy Week and focused on educating patients and healthcare professionals about EECP treatment, patient selection, and the potential role of non invasive cardiac therapy in patients with ischemic heart disease. The initiative reflected the growing awareness of Enhanced External Counterpulsation in Tamil Nadu and India.

At the time, EECP treatment had been incorporated into the Tamil Nadu Government flagship Non Invasive Ischemic Burden Reduction Program NIBR P. The program represented an important step in expanding access to EECP therapy through the government healthcare system and promoting awareness of non invasive approaches to cardiac care.

The centre was reported at the time as the largest EECP centre in India, with five EECP systems and a treatment capacity of approximately 45 patients per month. The scale of the program demonstrated the increasing adoption of EECP therapy in India and the growing interest in advanced non invasive treatment approaches for suitable cardiac patients.

Enhanced External Counterpulsation uses synchronized external compression of the lower limbs during the cardiac cycle to support blood circulation toward the heart. EECP is also associated with the concept of a natural bypass through collateral circulation. For appropriately selected patients, EECP may be considered as part of a medically supervised approach to cardiac care, including patients exploring heart blockage treatment without surgery.

The Third Annual EECP Therapy Week Celebration highlighted the continued efforts of IETA and Dr. S. Ramasamy to promote patient awareness, professional education, and the appropriate clinical use of Enhanced External Counterpulsation therapy in India.
